Papua New Guinea in Brief
Papua New Guinea lies South of the equator and is approximately 160km north of Australia. Rich in natural resources, PNG is largely undeveloped and offers breathtaking sceneries ranging from pristine coral atolls to volcanic mountains. From the untouched tropical rainforests and vast rivers, flat grassland and mangrove swamps, the diverse geography of Papua New Guinea reflects the wide spectrum of society contained within it.
Establish from a colonial history that has seen the country switch hands between various administrators, it achieved independence on the 16th of September, 1975 and is a member of the British Commonwealth.
The country consists of 4 regions – Southern, Highlands, Momase, and Islands – which consist of 20 provinces, each with their own unique character and cultures. The diverse cultures date back 30,000 years and are kept alive today with rituals involving deaths, feasts, marriages, compensations ceremonies and initiation rites. Annual shows around the country show case the traditional bilas (dressing) and “sing sings” from all around the country. The largest shows being the Goroka and Mt Hagen shows which attract thousands of spectators each year.
There are over 800 local languages that exist in Papua New Guinea, the main languages being Pidgin (Tok Pisin), Motu and English.
Port Moresby is the capital city of Papua New Guinea and offers the visitor a taste of the different cultures of PNG in one centre. Lae being the second largest city in PNG, caters for most of the Industrial operations in the coutry.
